랍 콘살베스

Rob Gonsalves was born in Toronto, Canada in 1959.
His main childhood hobby was drawing from imagination in various media.
By age 12 his interetst in architecture developed as he learned perspective drawing techniques and began to do his first paintings and renderings of imagined buildings.
After an introduction to the surrealist styles of Dali and Tanguy he began his first paintings at age 16.

그의 어린시절의 주요한 취미는 상상력에 의해 그림을 그리는 것이였다.

The "magic realism" approach of Magritte along with the precise perspective illusions of Escher came to be huge influences in his work.

In his post college years, Rob worked full time as an architect, painting trompe l'oeil murals, theater set painting and other projects in his spare time.

After an enthusiastic responce in 1990 at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, Rob decided to paint continually.

Although most people categorize his work as surrealism, Rob believes his work differs from pure surrealism due to the fact that his work is deliberately planned and results from conscious thought.

His ideas are largely generated by the external world (which many surrealists tried to ignore) and involve recognizable human activities, using carefully planned illusionist devices.

Rob tries to inject a sense of magic into otherwise realistic scenes. As a result, the term "magic realism" describes his work more accurately. Rob's work is an attempt to represent the human desire to believe in the impossible.

Educated at the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute and The Ontario College of Art, Rob's original work and Limited Edition Giclees are collected by numerous individuals, corporations, embassies, and a US Senator.
